GOALS OF MINI GARDEN A: SOIL BASE
GROWING
- The student will perform individual experiments under
controlled conditions and observe seed germination and the effects
of varying environment upon plant growth.
- The student will utilize scientific methods throughout their
investigations. He or she will perform the experiments, observe
the results, record data, and reach conclusions based on their
data.
- Since the development of a technical vocabulary is an
important part of all science studies, basic terminology for plant
and seed structure are introduced whenever appropriate.
OBJECTIVES OF MINI GARDEN A: SOIL BASE
GROWING
The student will:
- Learn what environmental conditions are required for plant
germination.
- Have the ability to define, in his or her own words, the terms
dormant and germinations.
- Define the words seed, seed coat, cotyledon, embryo, tap root,
secondary root, root hair, stem, leaf, chlorophyll, and
photosynthesis.
- Describe quantitative and qualitative differences between
different kinds of seeds.
- Identify the important parts common to all seeds.
- Describe the sequence of events in seed germination.
- Compare the appearance of plants grown with and without light.
- Describe the effect of light upon the direction of seedling
growth.
- Compare the growth of plants with and without essential
minerals.
- Identify seed leaves (cotyledons) and true leaves.
