KT1004
BATTERIES AND BULBS
(Grades six and up)
GOALS OF BATTERIES AND BULBS
The child will:
- Discover how an electric current follows a path from a power
source to a light bulb and return to the power source effecting an
electric circuit.
- Learn how to manipulate a switch and observe that it can
function as a tool to complete or interrupt a circuit.
- Discover relationships between electricity and magnetism and
will be able to conduct experiments utilizing the concept of
electromagnetism.
OBJECTIVES OF BATTERIES AND BULBS
The child will:
- Explore relationships among a batteries, copper wires, a
switch, and light bulbs.
- Discover through trial and error which wire connections will
light the bulb and which connection will not light the bulb.
- Discover through trial and various ways to light a bulb.
- Discover that batteries will produce heat if a circuit is
created through them and that the power of batteries degenerate
after use.
- Define in "his or her own words, a circuit. The child should
be able to put into words something to the effect that electricity
travels in a circular fashion through wires from a source of some
kind to a light or some other object and that it continues on its
way after it has passes by the light back to the source.
- Discover through trial and error the effect of a "short
circuit" and be able to attach the name "short circuit" to the
phenomena.
- Define in his or her own words, circuits in series and
circuits in parallel.
- Discover the phenomena of magnetism, electromagnetism, and
polarization.
- Create and test his or her own hypotheses using the materials
both in the kit and found materials from the child's environment.
