Bruce Robert Dean: the banana bandito

Biographical Information

I am working artist and art teacher (Leominster High School). A graduate of Tufts University, I earned a masters degree in a study of designing environments for educational settings in the Humanistic and Behavioral Studies Program at Boston University. After three years in day care centers, I worked for five years as an elementary art teacher in five schools in Leominster, Mass. After budget cuts eliminated the arts in Leominster, I worked for the next 21 years in Uxbridge Public Schools and returned to Leominster in 2003. My pre-school work has influenced many projects bringing play and experimentation into the school setting. Since 1992 I have worked with teachers, a science museum, and students to create museum environments in school settings. Children explore nature through art, science, and mathematics. Working with a team at The Discovery Museums (Acton, MA) for over a decade continues to be an amazing experience. In August of 2004, I had a solo show of my oil paintings, silver gelatin photographic prints, and hand colored prints at the Golden Street Gallery in New London, CT.

My high school honey and lifelong partner Marcia and I are blessed with two great children, Zachary and Alexandra. Zak is working full time as a waiter and studying business management at Johnson and Wales. Alexandra is thriving at Colgate University and soaking in everything. We were thrilled when Marcia earned her doctorate in Audiology two years ago. We have lived in Princeton since1976. I work in black and white photography, paint with oils, and currently I'm experimenting with the combination of the two mediums. In 1986 I worked statewide helping teachers develop schoolgrounds for outdoor learning. In 1992, through a U.S. Christa McAuliffe Fellowship, I worked with two museums developing traveling exhibits for school courtyards, which then transitioned indoors for urban school districts. That started Explore and Discover on its way. We worked in Uxbridge for over a decade developing a system-wide program on this concept. For the next five years, I will conduct an experiment of creating my vision of a museum classroom where students are encouraged to explore and discover.

How I Learn

"I have always enjoyed a detective approach to learning. It's a challenge to get leads on different resources (people, organizations, and places) and try to track them down. Bucky Fuller refers to "cosmic fishing", casting your line out and seeing what you reel in. Everyone, he maintains, has great ideas, but most people don't capture them and even fewer act on those they retain. I am keenly interested in capturing ideas. Working as part of a team is very rewarding. Each person brings a unique perspective to the task and together, unpredictable solutions are reached. I enjoy being around people who are excited about what they are doing, and I try to take in what they share. Family and friendships are what I value most."
