Course Description: This course begins with an intensive drawing review in order to re-awaken your powers of observation. The course then covers design elements and principles in depth through: color theory, composition, painting, collage, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, and other medium. Art history is integrated through the study of artists and movements. Students are often asked to explore a technique after studying it in historical context.
Materials: Each student is assigned a folder, given a pencil and eraser, and charged $1 for a sketchpad. Journal/sketchbooks are available for $5. Students may turn in pencils and erasers for new ones. There is a 25 cent charge for each when lost. Other materials are provided in class.
Grading: An art grade is comprised of many elements. Objective factors include daily attendance, class participation, completion of assignments on time, and skill development. Students should realize that effort, cooperation and personal improvement are valued as much as the product. Students are expected to check in with the instructor for independent work when they complete assignments before deadlines, and to always use class time constructively. Complex and demanding independent projects are encouraged for students who are interested in advanced assignments beyond class time.
Projects: Class projects often take more than 1 class. Some will last a week. A letter grade is given for each project (A, B, C, etc.) and is based on the assigned problem along with craftsmanship. Smaller assignments receive check, check plus, or check minus and are balanced into the final grade. Daily effort, attitude, care/use of materials and participation in clean-up are included as one project grade.
¥ Incomplete projects receive no grade. Student's are responsible for completing all assignments and requesting extensions for legitimate reason.
¥ Ten points are taken off for unexcused late projects up to one week These must be completed as homework.
¥ When a student falls behind s/he is to do the current assignment in class and do the make up after school or at home.
Homework: Homework is assigned. Preliminary studies for a project, researching a topic, and completing work where deadlines are approaching is expected.
Absences: Students are responsible for making up any missed work by consulting with teacher to see what work is needed. Students may work in the art room after school during open studio times.
Exams: Students may be given final projects as take home in advanced with a scheduled due date along with dedicated class time.
