Staffas Broussard Staffas is currently Asssistant Professor of Developmental Mathematics at the University of New Orleans in New Orleans, Louisiana. He is directs the Mathematics Tutor Center at the university , the Human Tutorial Project , and the New Orleans Algebra Project. He has taught at the university for more than two decades. Currently, he teaches geometry to mathematics majors and to secondary and elementary education majors. He has worked as a consultant in applied mathematics and statistics in private industry. Twelve years ago, Staffas started working with the Algebra Project which had developed a mathematics intervention for middle schools. The Algebra Project’s work inspired him to play a more active role in middle and high school mathematics education. He has worked with teachers in many cities and communities. He has designed many teacher professional development workshops focussing on mathematical content and its related pedagogy. He is an Algebra Project trainer of trainers. He has also designed curriculum for middle and high school mathematics. Among these curriculum pieces are two that focus on ratio and proportion, The African Drum and Ratios Curriculum with the Algebra Project and A Ratio Model of Rational Numbers. He is a sought after presenter and presents frequently. As a result of his work with the Algebra Project, he was an invited presenter at the Spender Foundation Conference: Collaborative Research for Practice, New Orleans, La. which resulted in the paper "The Algebra Project's Model for Professional Development: An example of collaborative research for practice." Currently, he is working with William Crombie on a reorganization of the high school mathematics curriculum based on the polynomial calculus. |
