Mission Statement

Who We Are
The Advanced Study Initiative in Quantitative Literacy is a nationally distributed community concerned with the present state of mathematics education in the K-12 and post-secondary school systems.
The Advanced Study Initiative believes that quantitative literacy is a critical component to full social, political and economic participation in the 21st century and that consequently the institution of the school plays a crucial role in ensuring an equitable distribution of opportunity.

Mission

To promote a deep conceptual understanding of the underlying concepts, unifying themes, and organizing principles of mathematics and the quantitative sciences.
Objectives
The Advanced Study Initiative directs its attention and energies towards teachers, students, and communities in the following fashion.
  • To help Teachers achieve an instructional practice grounded in inquiry, supported by robust assessment, and continually improved through collaborative reflection.
  • To help Students achieve a deep conceptual understanding of the content and unifying concepts of specific knowledge domains in the quantitative sciences.
  • To help Communities achieve greater equity and access to the resources necessary for quantitative literacy in a democratic society and a knowledge-based economy.
