Family of Ellen J. Ahern
and Arthur F. Coughlin

Ellen J. Ahern, born to John Ahern and Catharine Ahern at Cloughlucas in Mallow, Co. Cork, baptized at St. Mary's in Mallow (sponsors: John Bryan and Johanna Relihan), immigrated to the U.S. in about 1860, died Tuesday, 30 March 1926 in Arlington, and was buried on Thursday, 1 April 1926 in St. Paul's cemetery in Arlington. Ellen married Arthur F. Coughlin (23), son of Jeremiah Coughlin and Mary Keefe, 3 June 1866 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He died 5 November 1929.

In 1910 they owned the home they lived in at 54 Norcross Street and Arthur worked as a farm laborer. In 1920, a nephew, James Meehan, was living with them.

They had the following children:

  1. Jeremiah J. Coughlin, born 9 April 1867 in West Cambridge, baptized at St. Peter's in Cambridge (sponsor: John Ahern and Ellen Fitzpatrick), worked as a teamster and married Hannah "Annie" Breen (aged 24) at St. Malachy's in Arlington 17 April 1892 (witnesses: Patrick Coughlin and Bridgett Newcomb). She was born in Ireland to Michael Breen and Margaret Burke. They had the following children:
  2. James F. Coughlin, born 15 May 1869 in Arlington, baptized 23 May at St. Peter's in Cambridge (sponsor: Michael Coughlin and Mary Murphy), died of consumption in Arlington 20 September 1890.
  3. John Coughlin, born in Arlington 11 August 1871, baptized 13 August at St. Peter's in Cambridge (sponsor: Patrick Ahern and Mary A. Whittier), died 14 August 1873 of dysentery in Arlington.
  4. Patrick M. Coughlin, born 10 October 1873 in Arlington, worked as a plumber and married Abbie T. Buckley (age 23), daughter of Daniel Buckley and Anna Reardon, 25 October 1894 at St. Malachy's (witnesses: George Ahern and Anna Reardon). They had the following children:
  5. John Coughlin, born 18 March 1876, baptized 19 March at St. Malachy's (sponsor: John Ahern and Ellen Roche), married Hannah "Anna" B. O'Brien 8 January 1895 and had the following children:
  6. Arthur Coughlin, Jr., born 17 September 1877 in Arlington.
  7. William A. Coughlin, born about June 1880 in Arlington, baptized 20 June at St. Malachy's (sponsor: Patrick Ahern and Mary O'Neil), married Mary F. Hubbard of Arlington, daughter of Michael and Honora, 27 April 1904 at St. Agnes (witnesses: John Coughlin and Rachael Harlow). They had the following children:

Helen Josephine "Nellie" Coughlin, born 3 February 1883 in Arlington, baptized 4 February at St. Malachy's (sponsor: William Coughlin and Catharine Ahern), married William Driscoll of Arlington, son of Timothy Driscoll and Honora O'Connell 3 April 1910 at St. Agnes (witnesses: William A. Ahern and Martha A. McCarthy).
  9. Michael Coughlin, born 10 November 1885, baptized at St. Malachy's (sponsor: John Fitzpatrick and Margaret Roche) died of cholera infantum on Tuesday, 3 August 1886, buried in Malden.
  10. Mary Agnes Coughlin, baptized 30 October 1887 at St. Malachy's (sponsor: Cornelius Coughlin and Helen Meehan).
  11. Francis Augustus Coughlin, born in Arlington 20 August 1889, baptized the same day at St. Malachy's (sponsor: Francis Ahern and Anne Ahern), married Mary A. Byrnes 21 August 1912 at St. Joseph's in Medford.
  12. Elizabeth G. "Bessie" Coughlin, born 13 August 1894 in Ar- lington, baptized 14 August at St. Agnes (sponsor: George [Edward?] and Mary Ahern), married Denis Christopher 6 June 1920 at St. Agnes (witnesses: William J. O'Connell and Loretta E. Ahern). He was the son of Denis Christopher and Margaret Murphy. Bessie worked as a switchboard operator for the phone company.

Arlington Advocate - 18 November 1905
The police made a couple of raids last Saturday night for contraband liquors. At 63 No. Union street at the home of Mrs. Edw. Graney one half pint of whiskey was seized and a small quantity of wine. At Jeremiah J. Coughlin's, 100 No. Union St., three and one half pints of whiskey and "empties" were secured. The raids were made between 7 and 8 o'clock.

Arlington Advocate - 21 July 1906
Last November the place on North Union St. occupied by James [sic] Coughlin was searched on a warrant charging the illegal keeping of intoxicating liquors, and evidence to convict was found. On promise to give up the business the judge of the Third District Court placed Coughlin on probation and on Saturday last, being satisfied the promise had been kept, the original complaint was placed on file.
