Everyone who plays a prisoner is handed a tunic, sash, fingerless gloves and scarf and told to go get them dirty! There's no shortage of mud at the bottom of a quarry, so we rub our rags in mud, scrape them against the rusty pipe, and jump on them. A few very enthusiastic people roll themselves in the mud as well.
A man from the local cable access TV channel is hanging around, filming for a documentary about the project. He spots me smearing mud on my face and comes up to film me, saying "I need a shot of someone getting muddy!" He also interviews me briefly, so of course I babble like an idiot. We'll see what survives into the final cut.

Many of the local participants are going to also play extras in other parts of the film, such as the scene in a nightclub. So, those people are handed goggles and scarves to cover up their faces. Since I am only going to be in this prison planet scene, I'm one of the folks whose faces can be seen.
This is more or less my costume--tunic, sash, neck scarf, leg gaiters, extra rags, gloves, and mud. I have one knee pad because there aren't enough for everyone to have two (they're very mean to prisoners on this planet!). When the camera is on, I take my glasses off. Also, at the last minute I tie the pinkish scarf around my hair to resemble what the other prisoners have done with their costumes. I decide there is a logic to a prisoner wanting to protect her head as much as possible from the elements, plus it looks a little bit more alien. You can't see it too well, but I do have mud on my face and on the tunic. |
These are two of the other prisoners whose faces could be shown, Eugenia and Ken.

In the meantime, the stormtroopers get into their gear.
