Costumes in Firefly blend elements from different cultures, especially American and Asian. I've put together an outfit for wearing at conventions, especially when I'm doing my occasional Firefly panels. The t-shirt has the logo for Blue Sun, the mysterious corporation that dominates Firefly's commerce; I got it from www.bluesunshirts.com (no longer in business). The jacket is Vietnamese and the red shoes are Chinese; I got them both in Boston's Chinatown district.

I've also made a couple of rather silly costumes. For DragonCon 2005, I made a Chinese style jacket out of dinosaur print fabric, and then added speech balloons so that the dinosaurs would recite Wash's dino-dialogue: "We will call it... This Land." "I think we should call it YOUR GRAVE!" "Mine is an evil laugh!" "Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!"

For DragonCon 2006 I made a Fruity Oaty Bar Octopus to bust out of my blouse.

Firefly's design was also a blend of sci-fi and western themes. In the episode "Shindig" we saw a fancy ball with rich ladies in their handmade gowns. I'd been wanting an excuse to make something using one of the Civil-War-era costume patterns I've picked up, so I made my own version of a shindig-style dress (left).

I made the top from Butterick pattern 6694; the skirt in that pattern was a huge thing meant to be worn over hoop skirts, which I didn't have the inclination to make, so I made a simple drawstring skirt. I think it looks fine—after all, Firefly's set in the future, so it didn't have to be historically accurate.

I do need to get a better picture, though. The white hotel room backdrop isn't very flattering.
