nicname
One method of finding someone's internet address is using the nicname
program. Nicname searches the Internic and DARPA Internet user name
directory of registered users and, based on a user supplied search
key, looks up and displays information about all matched users. To
query this database, type:
world% nicname search_key
A search key consists of a single word or group of words contained in
quotes. The single word form matches user's first or last name. The
quoted multiple word search key must be in the format of "lastname,
firstname middlename" with the middle name field optional. All
searches are case insensitive.
When searching the database with a name key, you can use the first few
characters of the name instead of the entire word. This is handy if
you do not know the exact spelling of a name. In the case of middle
names, it is advisable to use only the first character as many
database records are truncated to this level.
Examples:
world% nicname blimey (All users with last name of 'Blimey')
world% nicname "blimey,bill"(Matches all 'Bill Blimey's)
The -h option to nicname allows you to examine other databases. In
general, the other database of interest will be on host NIC.DDN.MIL
which contains information about users on MILNET. Both the Internic
and MILNET servers support the "nicname help" command. For example,
to find Bob Smith, you might try:
world% nicname -h nic.ddn.mil bsmith
