msend Top Level
msend
Use the msend program to send an immediate message to another user. It
operates both locally and between hosts. If a message is specified on
the comand line, an attempt is made to send the message to the
specified user, tty, or host. If no message is specified, msend goes
into an interactive mode, sending each typed line to the specified
user. Interactive mode can be exited via end-of-file or a dot (.)
alone on a line.
If you are user ajones and you wanted to send a message to freduser on
The World, for example, you would type:
world% msend freduser@world.std.com
msend> hi fred, this is a test message, can you see these words?
msend> .
world%
Freduser's session would be interrupted with the following message:
[ajones@world.std.com (ttyq63): hi fred, this is a test message, can
you see these words?]
Likewise, you could use msend to send a message to a person on another
host, for example:
world% msend pkelly@aol.com
However, since some administrators at other sites may not want their
users routing to or receiving messages from non-local systems, routing
may be disabled at compilation time. An error message is returned
whenever a daemon with disabled routing is encountered.
