Command Description ------- ----------- gopher Start the gopher program. s Gopher command to save a document to a file.
Gopher is program that navigates information stored on Internet
computers. Many of the computers on the Internet offer services via
Gopher. The types of services include access to file archives,
directory services for phone numbers and email addresses, card
catalogs for libraries, and a myriad of other documents.
The World's gopher program is in constant communication with thousands
of other gopher programs from computers throughout the Internet. As
you explore the Internet via gopher, you will be traveling to these
computers and retrieving information in a real-time access mode.
To invoke gopher on World, issue the command:
world% gopher
The "Root gopher" will be shown. A list of topics will be displayed.
The following is a sample "Root gopher".
--> 1. Information About The World Public Access UNIX/
2. OBI The Online Book Initiative/
3. Internet/USENET Phone Books/
4. Shops on The World/
5. Book Sellers/
6. Electronic Frontier Foundation/
7. FTP/
8. Internet/
9. Libraries/
10. News and Weather/
11. Other Gopher and Information Servers/
The arrow on the left indicates the current topic. Enter a carriage
return to select this item. To select a different topic, enter the
topic number.
Other common gopher commands are:
q to leave gopher
m return to the main menu
a number go to that specific entry
up arrow, k move to previous line
down arrow, j move to next line
right arrow, return display current item
left arrow, u leave the current item and go up a level
>, +, space view next page
<, -, b view previous page
Gopher Types
At each menu level, the last character indicates the type of the
gopher item. The slash "/" indicates that additional topics are
available and a new menu will appear. Other common gopher types
include:
/ indicates more topics at next level
. indicates a text file
CSO indicates a phone book program
TEL indicates the Telnet program
? indicates an unknown type
These different gopher types will offer different command options. As
you navigate Internet via gopher, you'll be presented with the various
options.
Most selected items will return an ascii text document and will use
the "more" program to view it. If you want to keep this information,
there are various options available to you. After viewing the
document or after entering "q" during view mode, the following prompt
will appear:
Press to continue, to mail, to save, or to print:
Entering a carriage return will simply return to the previous topic
level. Entering "m" will allow you to mail the document to yourself
or to another email address. Entering "s" will allow you to save the
document to a unix file which can then be downloaded. The print
command is not available to remote modem customers when using World.
Be Careful Out There
As sites improve and extend their gopher services, menu items will
change accordingly. A menu that existed one day may not be quite the
same the next.
While most sites endeavor to keep their computers and networks
operational 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year, it is
possible for a resource to become unavailable. If a favorite resource
is not reachable, wait a few hours and see if the site returns. If
you continue to have trouble accessing a site, send mail to "staff"
and we'll check it out.
Direct Download from Gopher
One of the most powerful features of gopher is the ability to directly
download documents to your local host. At the moment when the arrow
is pointing at a document, the command 's' will immediatley issue the
save to file command. As usual with gopher, the file type will be
shown at the end of the menu item.
utils
--> 1. apple-docviewer.hqx
2. bbedit/
3. binhex4.bin.
4. diskcopy-4-2-readme.txt.
5. diskcopy-4-2.hqx
6. stuffit-expander-3-0.hqx
7. stuffit-lite-install.hqx
After selecting the item, enter 's' and the following menu will appear.
Save in file: apple-docviewer.hqx
[Cancel ^G] [Accept - Enter]
The cursor will be positioned on the filename. Enter 'control-u' to
erase this default filename. And enter the unix pipe command:
Save in file: | sz -a -
[Cancel ^G] [Accept - Enter]
The vertical bar, called a unix pipe, will tell gopher to save the
file directly into the download command (in this example it is
Zmodem). The -a indicates that the information is in plain ascii
format. The final hyphen indicates to sz that the information is
arriving from the pipe.
For a binary document, use the download sequence of:
Save in file: | sz -b -
[Cancel ^G] [Accept - Enter]
The '-b' option will allow for binary transfer. Other download
commands may be substituted for the "sz -" sequence. The final hyphen
must always be used when using pipes.
