Instead of saving all of your messages to one file, here's another method that will help you sort the messages into groups so you can save them to a number of different files, depending on your needs.
At the world% prompt, type
dmail
you will see something like the following message
90 items loaded 1:
If the first group of messages you wish to save came from one mailing list, for example "theatre@athena.mit.edu" you can narrow the mail program to just those message by typing at the 1: prompt
select From: theatre
It will then tell you how many messages there are from theatre, and you can save them all to one file with
write filename 1-
Dmail will tell you that it has saved those messages to a file, and you can delete them from the mail spool with
d 1-
Then widen the mail back to all of the messages with
select all
Then narrow again according to whatever you want:
select From: bob@csa.bu.edu
select Subject: question
etc.
Then save and delete as you wish.
Using this, you can sort the messages into individual files by whatever guidelines you want, according to the message header.
