Christmas Stocking Knitting Pattern

Here are directions for a knitted Christmas stocking which I created for my family.

Start

Cast on 62 start at top.
Rib 6 rows, the rest is worked in stockinette stitch.

Follow this grid for the body of the stocking. Here is the full picture.

Patterns

Here are some patterns I have made. Any simple pattern can be inserted on the leg of the stocking; just draw it in on the blank grid.

Heel

When you reach the end of the chart, cast off one stitch each end = 52 stitches. Place the first 13 st and the last 13 st on stitch holders. Attach the main color and work 16 rows on the middle 26 stitches. Slip them onto a holder and cut yarn.

Put heel stitches on needle, with back edges in the middle. Join main color, with right side of stocking facing you, work even in stockinette for 13 rows, ending with a Knit row.

Shape heel

On right side, pick up and knit 12 stitches on the side of the heel, knit across 16 heel stitches, pick up and knit 12 stitches on other side of heel =40 stitches.

Make heel gusset

Repeat these two rows until 26 stitches are left, end with a knit row.

Change to double pointed needles, put instep stitches =26 and the heel stitches (13 stitches on two of the needles). Knit around to back of the heel and start counting rows. Knit 24 rows.

Shape toe

On the first needle, k to last 3 stitches, k 2 tog, k 1: on second needle k 1, sl 1, k 1, passo, k to last 3 stitches, k 2 tog, k 1: on the third needle, k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, k to end of round

Knit
Repeat these two rows until there are 16 stitches on the needles. Cast off the remaining stitches and sew them together. You could do the kitchener stitch, but I can't get the hang of it. I like to make 4 or 6 row stripes on the toes of my stockings. I start the stripes where I start to shape the toe.

Finish

Embroider the name of the recipient on the top with duplicate stitch. Sew all the seams, and crochet a chain for the hanger.
This page is for my mother, who took 23 years to finish my Christmas stocking. Thanks, Mom.
