DINOSAUR ANNEX is a
chamber ensemble dedicated to music of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries,
especially new works and works by composers from the Boston area. Co-operatively
run by players and the Artistic Director, the ensemble has a wide-ranging
repertory embracing all styles of contemporary classical music, from twelve-tone
to microtonal to pop and "world music" influenced, with and without electronics.
A Short History
The group was founded in 1975-76
by performers and composers, some of whom were associated with The Annex
Players, as the musical "annex" of New England Dinosaur Dance Theater—thus
the unusual name. Now in its twenty-fifth season, Dinosaur Annex has a
long and rich history featuring commissioned works by both established
and rising composers. Under the musical direction of Scott
Wheeler since 1982, Dinosaur Annex has cultivated an audience of new
music listeners throughout Boston, the New England region and the world.
This season, in addition to its regular series in Boston and Cambridge,
Dinosaur Annex performs at Amherst College. In recent years the ensemble
has also toured to the University of New Hampshire, New England Conservatory,
Harvard University and Smith and Wesleyan Colleges. The ensemble has toured
elsewhere in New England and in New York, as well as to the Mozarteum in
Salzburg, Austria, the Ijsbreker in Amsterdam, and in London and Paris.
Dinosaur Annex performances are also heard by delayed broadcast over WGBH
radio. Our growing discography will soon be supplemented by the first all-Dinosaur
Annex recording, featuring live performances from past concert series,
to be released soon on CRI.
