Announcing the release of:
SOUTHERN RAIL - Live! At the Linden Tree
Southern Rail is proud to present the second CD in our series of 30th
anniversary releases. For the first release, we went
back into the vaults and came out with tracks from the vinyl albums
we produced in the 1980s. This time, we're doing
something we've never done before - a live concert recording.
We've always been attracted to the idea of a live CD. The energy and
spontaneity of performing in front of an audience
is one of the things that we look forward to every time we get on a
stage, and some of that energy and spontaneity is
lost in the sterile environment of the recording studio. We've always
thought about doing a live recording, and our fans
have asked for one, but we never quite got around to it before. Until now.
January 5, 2008 at the Linden Tree was special. We arrived to find
that there were enough advance reservations to sell
out nearly every seat in the room. As showtime got close, people
started lining up - people holding reservations, fans who
didn't think they'd need one, people who read about the show in the
Boston Globe. Liz, the promoter, decided she would
seat everyone who showed up, and she started getting creative. First
she sold seats on the piano benches. Then she pulled
chairs out of the day care center in the back room. Finally, she eyed
the stage. Behind our microphones was a stage-set
living room, with easy chairs, couches and bookshelves. Finally, a
half hour late, and with sixteen people sitting behind us
on the stage, everyone was seated and we were able to start the show.
We always have fun at live shows, and try to make the audience part
of the show. This night, the audience was literally
part of the show, onstage with us, listening to our monitors and
getting blinded by the stage lights, just like us. Maybe it
was the size of the crowd, or hearing the applause coming from all
sides, but there seemed to be a little extra energy in
this show. When we listened to the recordings the next day, we looked
at each other and said, "this is it."
As you listen to these songs, don't expect studio perfection. There
are flaws in all live music, some in this case caused by
that little extra enthusiasm that we tried to put into every note. As
a performer, you hope for a special night, in a
wonderful room, with an enthusiastic audience. When that happens, the
joy of performing for people becomes a
transcendent experience. This was such a night, and we're glad to be
able to share it with you.
