Little Green Men by Christopher Buckley

kcl 25 Feb 00
A humorous look at aliend abductions.  Lots of "inside the Beltway" references.  In the same kind of government conspiracy family as X-Files.  Not as hilarious as his Thank You For Smoking but still very nice!

The Science of Discworld by Terry Pratchett, Jack S. Cohen, and Ian Stewart
tpv 26 Feb 00
The Science of Discworld is one of the best popular expositions of serious science I have ever seen, and I have seen many. I found only one minor error of fact in the whole volume.  All this is almost beside the point, since it is such fun to read one and absorb the science subliminally.  The premise, for those who know and love Terry Pratchett's books, is that on a world governed by magic, the idea of a world governed by science is as ludicrously fantastic as a world governed by magic is to those of us who live on a world governed by science. A wonderful read and good science to boot.  Highly recommended for anyone
between 10 and 110 years.

Stardoc by S. L. Viehl

Reminded me of James White's Sector General books, but with better medical info.  I'm looking forward to a sequel!  Tom also liked it.

Beyond the Gates by Catherine Wells

Paleontological/ecological  thriller/romance with very balanced treatment of religion.  Indiana Jones meets Dune in the Jurrasic - sort of - with a very strong female lead.  It has a satisfying ending but there is lots of room for a sequel.

One Virgin Too Many by Lindsey Davis

How can you miss Marcus Falco as the Curator of Sacred Poultry!  Yes, there is a nice mystery and fun look at life in old Rome.  But my favorite parts were those dealing with the poultry.  I just know the chickens in the book were Dorkings!

Sick Puppy by Carl Hiaasen
kcl 5 March 00
Hiaasen adds customized Barbie dolls to his usual funny but violent over-the-top look at Florida ecological preservation and dirty politics.  It may be the last book in the loosely connected series that has Lt. Jim Tile, but the ex-Governor may be back! cover
