Sock Bibliography, Index and Reviews

(These books and patterns are from my own collection.  I will  answer questions about them but they are not for sale.)

My Rating System:

Easy - one color or only one color per row, simple sock, toe-up or top-down on DPNs

Medium - two color stranded or slip stitch (this is what I can knit now), lace

Hard - cables, Fair Isle or more than two colors per row, intarsia, entrelac, argyles, more than 12 spi, twined knitting.

In several languages including English. Many sweater and vest patterns with matching socks.  Argyles, cables, color stranded, embroider, many sizes.

Some easy patterns, but most aren't.  Patterns are not as clearly written as I'd like.  Nice penguin chart.

40 patterns for men  (sports and gaming themes) Several matching vests. Golf club covers.  Straight and DPNs, fingering weight, mostly intarsia with 2 cable patterns, top down, size 1 and 2 needles..

Hard but an amazing collection of charts.

Easy, if you can knit with 1.25 mm needles.

56 pages.  Color and black and white photos. Entrelac, lace, double knit, cables, stranded. Various sizes of yarn and needles. Adult sizes.

Easy to hard, most are medium.

Hand Knit Socks for Men, Women, Children, Vol. 340

53 patterns, 35 pages. Black and white photos, 4 pages color photos including covers. Top-down. Various sizes of yarn, needles and pattern sizes. Two-needle socks, argyles, cables.

Easy to hard (but more of them are hard!)

120 pages.  The first half of the book covers how socks are traditionally knit in the UK and Europe.  Second half has patterns based on classic ones from these countries.  Presents toe and heel options.  Color and black and white photos and drawings.

Easy to Hard.  A book to read for inspiration and to learn techniques, as well as to knit from.

17 patterns, 96 pages. Starts with basics of sock knitting.  DPNs in 2m to 3.25 mm, fingering and sport yarn. Color stranded, cables, lace, Christmas sock.  Spiral binding on a tall book. Color photos.

Pet Socks in stranded and intarsia with charts for dogs, cat, rabbit, llamas and sheep. Sport weight yarn, 3.25 or 4 mm DPNs, top-down.  Sized for adults.

Medium (except for the intarsia used in the Pet Socks) the designs are very nice.

Simple Socks: plain and fancy

112 pages, black and white drawings.  Detailed instructions on top-down and toe-up socks.  Discussion of use of contrasting colors in socks, color stranding, motfis, zigzag intarsia and true intarsia.

No real patterns but some of the best writing on how to knit more complicated socks.

13 patterns for socks. 34 pages. Color photos Sized for adults.  Uses 3.25mm DPNs and Philosopher's Wool.  All Fair Isle patterns except for one Aran kilt hose.

Based on a basic top-down pattern. Medium to hard, but I think I could manage all but the kilt hose right now..

Hard. Designed to be knit with Tongue River Icelandic wool.  I look forward to being skilled enough to knit these!

Easy to medium.  This is the book I wish I'd had after I was comfortable making a very simple sock.  Interesting patterns using variagated, self-patterning yarns.

Hard.  I expect it will take another year of knitting before I'm ready to try these.

70 patterns, 114 pages, color photos. Various weights of yarn, sizes of needles, and sizes of patterns. All common sock knitting techniques and a few very uncommon ones.

Easy to extremely hard.  Great book for inspiration to get out of a sock knitting rut.  See below for a collection of pattern reviews.

Mostly easy to medium patterns, at least in these 2 issues.

Socka Nr. 20, 24 pages text and diagrams, 4 pages color photos

33 patterns for socks, matching hats and mittens, a crocheted bag. Color stranded work, slip stitches, cables, and variegated yarns combined with solids.  German and English text.  Adult and children sizes.  Size 2.5mm and 3 mm DPNs.

Socks are worked on a basic top-down pattern that is explained in detail.  There are a few easy patterns and medium, but most are hard.

How to knit socks using  two circular needles, toe up or top down, one or two socks at a time. Also how to knit a top-down sock on one 32" or 40" circular.

I don't know why my favorite sock knitting method (one sock on one 24" circ, toe-up) isn't included.
