Mixed clouds and sunshine will prevail today with winds turning south and beginning a brief easing of the chill this afternoon. Highs will reach the 30s, normal for this time of year. Light showers of rain and snow may develop south of the mass turnpike around 6 pm. Tonight, a burst of snow and rain is forecast with mostly rain in the Interstate 95 corridor from westerly to Providence and Boston eastward. Rain should melt any small amount of late evening snow accumulation there. However, elsewhere, just to the west of Interstate 95, including the distant west and northwest suburbs of both Boston and Providence, one to 3" of snow is forecast. There is even a low probability of a stripe of 5" amounts amounts from the Merrimack Valley southwestward through the Worcester hills into the hills bordering Rhode Island and Connecticut. Lows will be in the 20s over most of the snow area and 30s Interstate 95 corridor eastward. On Friday, precipitation will taper to scattered snow showers by forenoon and gusty west winds will develop during the afternoon. Friday night will be brisk. Saturday will turn colder during the afternoon with a possibility of a few flurries and a strong likelihood of wind gusts between 45 and 55 mph. Power outages are possible, especially eastern Massachusetts. Wind chill early Sunday morning should again range between zero and 20 below. While Sunday will start cold, winds will ease in the afternoon or evening. On the weather map, low pressure was just starting to form this morning off the southeast coast of the United States. It will race across Cape Cod Friday morning, then slow down with explosive deepening as it heads for an arrival in the Maritimes Friday night. That storm will the meander through the Maritimes over the weekend and start weakening on Sunday. === The weather observed at WORCESTER, MA at 07:54 AM EST was: === The skies were clear.
