Some of the showers contained briefly heavy rain over portions of central Maine, and a few flashes of lightning were seen just off the sea coast of New Hampshire. Near the coast, northeast winds gusted to 30 mph at times. The clouds and onshore winds kept temperatures fairly uniform during the overnight hours, and at 300 am temperatures ranged from a low of 45° at Augusta Maine to a high of 53° at Lebanon New Hampshire. The low pressure system off the southeast New England coast will remain nearly stationary today and tonight, bringing a continuation of the cloudy skies and shower activity. The best chance of rain showers will be across Maine, but all areas will see at least scattered showers, along with patchy fog and drizzle. Northeast winds of 10 to 20 mph will make high temperatures in the 50s feel even cooler, especially along the immediate coast. The rain shower activity will become more scattered in nature during the overnight hours, with the best chance of showers over eastern Maine. Patchy fog and drizzle will also be seen, especially near the coast and across the hills of central and southwest Maine. The east winds, along with the clouds and rain showers, will prevent temperatures from dropping much overnight, as most locations see temperatures drop into the 40s late tonight. The low pressure system will start to weaken a bit on Thursday. While clouds and cool temperatures will remain, thanks to the continued onshore wind, the shower activity will be more scattered in nature. Highs will once again be in the 50s, which is some 5 to 15° below normal for the middle of may. Another low pressure system approaching northern New England from the Ohio valley will bring an increased chance of showers to New Hampshire and nearby western Maine later Thursday night and Friday. At the same time, high pressure trying to build in from the Canadian Maritimes will introduce drier air to the remainder of Maine. The battle between the two systems will create a very sharp cut off for showers Friday into Friday night. At this time, the best chance of showers will remain across southern New Hampshire and southwest Maine, as resident of northern and eastern Maine get a peek at the sun. Highs Friday will range from the 50s where the rain falls to the 60s for portions of northern and eastern Maine. The same pattern is expected for Friday night and Saturday, as the battle between the drier air to the northeast and the showers to the southwest continues. The drier air should finally win out for the later half of the weekend for all areas. === The weather observed at WHITEFIELD, NH at 08:52 AM EDT was: === The skies were mostly cloudy.
