The coldest January in over 85 years in parts of eastern Massachusetts is drawing to a close on a continued cold note. Temperatures at daybreak in southern New England ranged between 15 and 25° with gusty west winds and patchy cloudiness. Radar showed a couple of flurries over the interior. Today will be blustery and cold with temperatures holding nearly steady and winds gusting between 35 and 45 mph this afternoon. This will cause considerable blowing and drifting of yesterdays powdery snow, especially on ridge tops and south of the mass turnpike. Sunshine will be occasionally dimmed by cloudiness. Scattered flurries are expected, especially in the interior. Skies will clear tonight and it will be colder with wind chills below zero. Strong winds will continue along the coast. Any mariners venturing across the coastal waters will encounter heavy freezing spray and in some areas, sea ice. Lows will be in the single numbers interior and teens coast. Friday wont be quite as blustery, but it will still be cold with highs similar to the readings of this afternoon, upper teens to mid 20s, roughly about 10° below normal. Saturday should be similar to Friday with the wind still having a chilling effect. Sunday is shaping up to be a few degrees milder and with less wind as highs head for the freezing mark, the warmest in over a week, since last Thursday. Strong low pressure will meander from Newfoundland to the Gulf of Saint Lawrence the next couple of days and then weaken over the weekend. High pressure will build into New England Sunday. The next storm to affect the northeast will start taking shape in the southern plains Monday and then head toward New England Tuesday. === === === ORH Terminal Aerodrome Forecast issued 29-Jan-2004 08:05 EST === 8am: 26013g23kt P6sm Sct025; Tempo 8-10am: 1sm -sn Bkn015 Ovc025 10am: 28029g39kt P6sm Bkn030; Tempo 1-5pm: 4sm -shsn 7pm: 27020g30kt P6sm Sct035 1am: 27016g24kt P6sm Skc
