Partial clearing allowed temperatures to drop into the teens across the interior valleys. Elsewhere low temperatures were in the 20s. An arctic cold front will cross southern New England late this afternoon and evening. Much colder air will be ushered in tonight. Northwest winds will increase to 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph across the interior high terrain and over Cape Cod and the islands. In addition the combination of gusty northwest winds and temperatures plummeting into the negative single numbers well inland will cause dangerously cold wind chill values by daybreak Wednesday. Winds will begin to diminish Wednesday afternoon as high pressure builds from the northwest. It will be blustery and frigid. Highs will range from the single numbers to the lower teens. Low pressure advancing from the Ohio valley will bring increasing clouds Wednesday night. The low will begin to push off the mid Atlantic coast by daybreak Thursday. Light snow will be possible along south coastal locations. It will remain frigid with lows from the single numbers near the coast to the negative single numbers inland. Skies will be mostly cloudy Thursday with a chance of snow. Accumulating ocean effect snow will be likely for the Cape and islands.
