Clear skies and a firmly entrenched arctic air mass over snow covered terrain sent overnight temperatures below zero across much of interior southern New England. As of 5 am, Keene in southwest New Hampshire had dropped to 15 below, and Jaffrey was still colder at 17 below. Even in Boston, right along the coast, the temperature had dropped to 1 above by 5 am. Along most of the immediate south coast, readings had dropped to around 10 above. A strong high pressure area over south central Canada will slide southeast and reach into northern New England by late Saturday. Meanwhile, a weak low pressure system will move off the mid Atlantic coast Saturday. The low will remain well south of New England, but just close enough for a chance of light snow or flurries along the south coast late tonight and early Saturday. Skies will be mostly sunny across southern New England today, except for increasing high clouds from the southwest late in the day. The sunshine may give a warmer appearance than reality, as high temperatures today will likely remain in the teens across southwest New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts, with a wind chill zero to 10 below, even during the afternoon. Elsewhere, the temperature is expected to reach the low to mid 20s with an afternoon wind chill mostly between zero and 10 above. Temperatures will drop to 5 to 10 below across much of southwest New Hampshire and northwest Massachusetts tonight. Across most of the remainder of interior southern New England, the temperature will drop to between zero and 10 above tonight. Thicker clouds will help keep temperatures along the south coast in the lower teens. Saturday should result in clearing skies across most areas, but a continuation of chilly conditions. High temperatures on Saturday will struggle to reach between 5 and 10 above across southwest New Hampshire and northwest Massachusetts. The major metropolitan centers of Boston, Providence and Hartford will experience high temperatures in the upper teens to perhaps near 20 on Saturday, while the immediate south coast and islands top off between 20 and 25. Looking ahead to the rest of the holiday weekend, arctic air is expected to remain entrenched. A second storm will move northeast from the mid Atlantic coast on washingtons birthday, and possibly spread significant snow into at least a part of southern New England. Any snow on Monday will be driven by a very brisk northeast wind. === The weather observed at WORCESTER, MA at 07:54 AM EST was: === The skies were clear. The prevailing visibility was 10 miles.
