There were still some lingering patches of fog where the visibility was reduced to 1 mile or less. Temperatures ranged from around 30° across southern New Hampshire, into the mid 40s across Cape Cod and the islands. The weather map showed a cold front stretching across southeast Massachusetts and Rhode Island. This front is expected to push out to sea this morning. A low pressure was developing over the Tennessee valley. Meanwhile strong high pressure resided over central Canada. For New Years day, there will be a brief period of fair weather. The low pressure from the Tennessee valley is expected to reach the mid Atlantic states by late this afternoon, and pass to the south of Nantucket overnight. The precipitation from this system should arrive over southern New England late this afternoon and evening. Most of this precipitation is expected to be rain through late this afternoon, then become a mix of rain, sleet and freezing rain by midnight. The precipitation should be a mix of sleet and snow by daybreak Thursday. South coastal Rhode Island and Massachusetts, as well as Cape Cod and the islands, could remain all rain for much of the night. Cold high pressure will dominate our region from late Thursday morning through Thursday night.
