Skies were mostly cloudy around the region near daybreak. Temperatures have fallen into 30s, with coastal areas around 40 degrees. Low pressure was developing in northern Virginia. It will intensify as it moves out south of New England this afternoon. Clouds will lower and thicken this morning, followed by a period of rain during the afternoon. Some wet snow may mix in across interior sections. Highs today will be in the mid 30s to middle 40s north to south. The departing low will bring clearing skies along with a gusty northwest wind tonight, dropping temperatures into the teens and twenties. A weak area of high pressure will bring diminishing winds and partly sunny skies for Saturday, with seasonable temperatures for mid January. Another storm system is expected to develop along the mid Atlantic coast late Saturday night, then head northeast toward Nantucket Sunday.
